About the Event
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you Reenactor Appreciation Weekend. This event is hosted and run by the dedicated volunteers of Reenactors Rock, Inc., a not for profit organization that promotes and supports activities and events created to enhance the reenacting community and the public’s understanding of history.
Reenactor Appreciation Weekend began in 2006 as an event for reenactors by reenactors for each member who volunteers on the event committee is or has been a reenactor at some point in their lifetime. The 5th annual event will be held on March 5, 6, 7, 2010 and it is quite possibly the first reenactor event of the season. The weekend was created as a means to give a warm thank you to the entire reenacting community as well as provide an opportunity for reenactors and other historical interpreters to get an early start on ordering new uniforms or period dress, refilling supplies, catching up with friends, learning about history and having a great time while doing it. It is a weekend of period dances, lively discussions, workshops, seminars, and shopping with a ladies tea and a gentleman’s cigar and brandy social for both reenactors and the general public thrown in for good measure.
We have an entire community of reenactors who live and breathe history every day. Each era of history, from the Revolutionary War to the present, is represented somewhere at some time by a reenactor who has something to say and teach us all. Through their knowledge of history and their dedication to the historic portrayal of those who lived during each time period we have a means of experiencing times long past. Their presence helps inspire curious inquiries and discussions of history everywhere they go. The event’s purpose is to help educate the reenacting community and the public about our nation’s historical culture and events as well as strengthen the reenactors’ accuracy of their historic portrayals.
Locally, in Gettysburg, PA, where the event originated, reenactors bring the town’s history literally to life eight months out of the year. Much of the tourism in Gettysburg involves the presence of reenactors who walk along the historic streets dressed as Civil War, WWII or even Revolutionary War soldiers or civilians. They add to the ambiance of this town’s culture as well as other locations throughout the nation because the non-reenacting public is drawn to them out of curiosity. It is only fitting that we honor their dedication and commitment to our nation’s history with this weekend.
